Kiting:
a defense used by player classes with low AL to decrease the amount of damage that they are taking from a melee fighter, most notably warriors. |

Also see: side-stepping: the art of pressing the "Q" and "E" buttons to step to one side, dodging ranged attacks. Not to be confused with "running" and "RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing runners!"

The correct, kick butt term would be strafing.
I don't know who termed the technique kite. Kiting is like flying a kite. |

Kiting means to run away from warriors that are beating on you as it will decrease their dps significantly.

Its simply strafe running which is usually best for dodging attacks while still getting away at a decent speed. Strafing is just moving side to side without moving your body direction mostly. As said earlier best for low AL classes to avoid damage.

Kiting is great for rangers where you run a bit, turn around and shoot, run some more, etc.

Kiting means running away from an attacker that's chasing you. It's because they trail along behind you like you're flying a kite, except it's a kite with an axe that wants to kill you.
It's not the same thing as strafing, not at all. The confusion arises because in Guild Wars, the best way to kite is by strafing (running sideways), because getting hit in the back while you're running is an automatic crit. Although, if a warrior is coming towards you but is still some distance away, then you want to run as fast as you can to prolong the time when he's not touching you, and that means turning your back. (This is sometimes called pre-kiting.) You can sometimes dodge arrows and other projectiles by changing directions while running. Strafing back and forth is the easiest way to do this. This isn't really kiting, though. |
